Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C is one of those rare things in music: a genuine masterpiece that vanished, only to be discovered years later. For years, there was only one Haydn cello concerto, a lyrically expansive work in D major, whose authenticity was questioned for a time but which is undoubtedly genuine and was composed in 1783. We also knew that Haydn had written an earlier Cello Concerto in C major. Haydn’s works for cello include two concertos, one in C Major (1761-1765) and one in D Major (1783). Both pieces were written for specific cellists of the Eszterháza orchestra, and both provide ample opportunity for the soloists to show off their skills and their instrument.
